The Algorithm

When a Silicon Valley billionaire flees her successful dating app start-up, it seems like an open-and-shut fraud case to the feds. But after investigators discover the app found perfect connections for nearly every user, they grapple with a much grander, murkier question.

The Logline

Pursuing fraud charges against a reclusive dating app founder, two investigators discover something else instead: the app had a near 100% success rate.

The Story at a Glance

A Silicon Valley superstar leaves her latest dating app venture in the dead of night, crippling its code on her way out—to the chagrin of shareholders. The feds get involved and send investigators to track her down. But the more they learn about her—and the couples her app connected—they start asking themselves the same questions: Is there only one person for all of us? Can love be quantified? And more importantly, should it?

The Characters

For Savannah Kind, MatchMade was just the next in a long line of successful (and incredibly lucrative) tech start-ups—which made her overnight disappearance and seeming self-sabotage all the more strange. The two feds assigned to the case each bring love-related baggage on the search for their missing person: divorced single dad Jonathan Park is decidedly cynical, while perpetual heartbreaker Leigh Cooper wonders if she missed her chance.

The Bottom Line

Love is an ethereal, often inexplicable force that adds incalculable meaning to life. But as we race to quantify and code every aspect of our lives in the name of convenience, might some elements of existence belong outside our control?
