The Story at a Glance

In this dual period piece, one house haunts two women separated by a century: the heiress and operator of a 19th Century news empire and a Black business owner in the turbulent 1960s. The various bumps in the night connect the two storylines, giving the women glimpses into the others’ life that include the impending dangers they themselves cannot see.

The Characters

After the passing of her father, Melanie Grand took the reins of her family’s publishing legacy—to the chagrin of her husband, Niles Lancashire, who has his own sights set on their fortune. In the turbulent ‘60s, Black business owner Patricia Evans stays busy in the office and fixing up the house—but her needy, drunken ex, Lyle Sherman, keeps showing up to slow her down.

The Bottom Line

While the house provides the jump scares, the men are the real danger here. Whether they’re heiresses or hard workers, women throughout history have operated in systems stacked against them—but by working together and looking out for one another, they may make it out of the haunting alive.
